This is a serious question for people who are in the e-commerce trenches right now.
I’m not looking for "MAKE 80K/WEEK ONLINE IN YOUR SPARE TIME!" crap. I’m not looking for "turn-key home business opportunites" or multi-level marketing BS. I’m not selling vitamins to my friends and neighbors or having "parties". I don’t want to be a pornmaster affiliate. I don’t want to fill out surveys or be a secret shopper, etc.

I want to sell things online, most likely through Amazon’s or Yahoo’s marketplace or something like that. I don’t care necessarily what the "thing" is. Ideally, I’d like to have as little inventory around my tiny apartment at any given time but other than that, I just want to know what the easiest thing to sell is and how/where to sell it.

All you have to do is research the demands and competitors using this tool http://www.adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal or http://www.tools.seobook.com/keyword-tools/seobook.
Search for keywords related to the products you want to sell. For example: you want to sell watches on amazon. Type the keyword “watch” (without quotes) on tool above and see the number of searches. Then find out how many competitors on this keyword by going to google search page and type the keyword "watch" (with quotes). If the number of competitors too much you should research again for more keyword / niche, for example: "casio watch".
Tips if you want to sell Amazon’s product, try to sell products that the price more than $200 since the commission given by amazon only from 4% to 6%. For example:
$200 x 4% = $8
If you sell the product that has price $200, your commission is $8.
Last, try to sell it and find out what product that really work for you. Hope this may help you.
