I am looking to find an older game preferably an RPG or an action adventure game where I and another person can directly connect to each other and play the game together. I’m not talking about a game such as WoW or Warhammer or any MMORPG that has a subscription. I’m talking about an older game that can run on my friends year old HP laptop. Something from 2004 or 2005 maybe?
I was considering the first NVN. Does it support direct connect play/LAN?

Diablo II is the classic game of this sort. No online fee, it supports both online and LAN play. It is a fast-paced RPG.
And there’s Neverwinter Nights. NWN2 might be too hard on the laptop, but the first NWN game should work fine.
You could try Heroes of Might & Magic V, that’s like RPG+Strategy+Adventure all together.
there are free mmorpgs. but if you can find a copy of The elder scrolls: Morrowind its a great game that gives you free reighn, there is so much to explore and find, it must have thousands of hours of play, it also has 2 expansions.
you can try runescape
and if you want an fps you could try war rock or soldier front
Dungeon Runners is free, fun, and has a low-cost upgrade path if you ever do want to pick up a membership…. enhanced magic items and a Bling Gnome to carry gear, otherwise you get the same game.
